Marylou Elliott (Faunce) Hemmick

August 15, 1933 ~ January 15, 2022 (age 88)

Obituary

Marylou Elliott Faunce Hemmick, age 88, of San Jose, California passed away peacefully on January 15, 2022.

Marylou was born August 15, 1933 in Indiana at home, the daughter of Frank and Leota (Elliott) Faunce.  She was employed for over 30 years at Varian Associates Medical Systems in Palo Alto, California as a Quality Control Inspector.  Upon retiring, she returned to school and earned her medical assistant certification.

She married her high school sweetheart, Donald E. Hemmick, in 1951.  After graduation, Marylou became a military wife and moved to Germany with her husband and young son, Robin.  Marylou learned to speak German fluently while stationed in Germany and was proud that her young son was bilingual.

She held steadfast to the medieval times family motto (Ne Tentest aut Perfice), "do not start something if you are not 100% committed to finishing it - All or Nothing".

Marylou was a hard worker who did not believe in handouts, nor approve of laziness.  She felt every job has value, and doing a job to the best of one's ability is the truest testament of a person's character.

A highly intelligent person with a quick wit, she had a larger than life personality and was a practical problem-solver.  She lived her life with a strong sense of duty, having done the right thing and maintaining high expectations of others to do the same - not because it's easy, but because it is the right and honorable thing to do.

Marylou enjoyed listening to music, singing, dancing, gardening, playing golf, helping others, and reading - her love of books was unparalleled.  She took great pride in her family history which can be traced back to the time of William the Conqueror.  She made sure that her son and daughters knew their history and would pass it on to future generations.  Consequently, her thirst for knowledge was profound.

She is survived by her children: Robin D. Hemmick (wife Rita) of California, Maura (husband Michael) Basanty of California, and Christiane D. Hemmick of California; brothers: Frank R. Faunce of Georgia and Kerry Faunce (wife Terri) of Florida; many nieces and nephews; 12 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.  Marylou would be so happy to know that a new great-granddaughter is due to arrive around her birthday this year.

"We are our mother's rose garden.  We are her legacy.  We hope she feels the love.  Echoed back from us".

Marylou was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Leota Elliott Faunce, and brother, Albert Faunce.

Cremation has taken place in California and her ashes will be buried next to her grandparents, Emerson and Maude Elliott; mother, Leota Faunce; Uncle Elhanan Elliott; and brother, Albert Faunce, at Talbott Cemetery, Mitchell, Lawrence County, Indiana, per her wishes.  On August 15, 2022, Marylou's birthday, we celebrate her life at 11:00 a.m. at Talbott Cemetery.
