Gene Edward Churchman, age 89, of Palmyra passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital. Born November 23, 1933 in Pekin, he was the son of the late Ellis Churchman and Josie (Graves) Churchman. On May 21, 1960, he married Alma (Losson) Churchman who survives.
Gene was a retired agent for Prudential Insurance and a member of the Charlestown Road Church of Christ. He entered the United States Army in February, 1956 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, attending basic training at Fort Carson, Colorado. Gene was shipped out to Germany in August, 1956 and returned in February, 1958. He spent 4 years in the U.S. Army Reserves at Jeffersonville, Indiana and was discharged as a Sargent; he was in the 41st battalion, 8th division (tank outfit) stationed at Leipheim, Germany.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Churchman; 2 daughters: Brenda Herman and Susan Phillips; 1 sister: Joellen Meahl; 5 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Josie Churchman; 2 brothers; and 1 granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 20, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home-Salem Chapel with Roger Shouse officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Burial to follow at Blue River Baptist Cemetery with full military honors.
