Maxine Williams Rutherford

December 13, 1936 — February 5, 2018

Maxine Williams Rutherford passed away February 05, 2018 after a struggle with rheumatoid arthritis and congestive heart failure at her home in Campton Hills, Illinois. Maxine was born on December 13, 1936 in Jonesville, Virginia to Ocie Greer Williams and Lue Williams. She was the second oldest of six children. As a child, Maxine attended Flatwoods United Methodist Church in Jonesville and was baptized in 1952 in the Powell River by Reverend Jim Sluss. Maxine attended Flatwoods High School in Jonesville and played basketball on the girls’ basketball team until 1952 when Lue bought a dairy farm in Salem, Indiana. Maxine graduated from the old Salem High School, in May of 1955. She married Halbert Rutherford Jr. (Hal) on January 22, 1955. Their daughter Belinda was born in 1958 and their son Jason was born in 1971. The family has lived in Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, and Illinois. Maxine held many different careers; she worked at the Farm Bureau in Salem, Indiana, Mead Johnson in Evansville, Indiana, as an assistant in the Dodson Public Accounting Firm in Jasper, Indiana, and most recently as the accountant for Rutherford & Associates in Campton Hills, Illinois. She was an avid gardener both with flowers and vegetables, she had her own perfect way of mowing the yard, and she loved to sew. Maxine’s most important role was as a loving wife, mom, and grandma. Maxine is survived by her husband of 63 years, Halbert (Hal) Rutherford Jr., Campton Hills, Illinois; her daughter, Belinda DeVoss, Montgomery, Illinois; her son, Jason Rutherford, South Elgin, Illinois (Andrea). Maxine leaves three grandchildren who have given her many hours of joy; Jennifer Friday, Glen Ellyn, Illinois; Joe Friday, Glendale, Arizona (Cara); and Brandon Rutherford, South Elgin, IL. Maxine is survived by her sisters Phyllis Williams Hobbs, Salem, Indiana, and Barbara Williams Noel, New Albany, Indiana. She is preceded in death by her father, Lue Williams, mother, Ocie Greer Williams, her two brothers Ted Williams and Earl Williams, and her oldest sister Betty Williams Bacon. Maxine’s wishes will be honored by cremating her remains and dividing them in three urns to be cherished by Halbert, Belinda, and Jason. Visitation will be from 9-11 AM Saturday May 26th at the Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home in Salem, with a memorial service at 11:00 AM. Online expressions: www.hughestaylor.net
