Barbara Ruth Mitchell

Barbara Ruth Mitchell, age 92, of Salem, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2026 at UofL Hospital.  Born February 9, 1934 in Scottsburg, she was the daughter of the late John Cravens and Hazel (Williams) Cravens.  On July 18, 1954, she married Marvin Lee Mitchell, Sr. who preceded her in death on August 24, 2011.

Barbara retired from the Bata Shoe Company; was a full time grandmother; and was a member of Mt. Hebron Church.

She is survived by 7 children: Lonnie Mitchell (Donna), Martha Smedley (Preston), Marvin Lee Mitchell, Jr., Ella Mae Cornett (Hiram), John Mitchell (Ladonna), Peggy Cozart, and Allen Mitchell (Bobbi); 14 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Hazel Cravens; husband, Marvin Lee Mitchell, Sr.; 1 brother: William Cravens; 5 sisters: Marguerrite Thorpe, Jeannete Rickey, Catherine Cochran, Marylee Fryfogle, and Diane Hulsart; 1 granddaughter: Mary Cornett; and 2 great grandsons: Hunter Speigelhalder and Meleek Mitchell.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 23, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home - Salem Chapel with Bro. Rodney Sweeney officiating.  Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 22 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.  Burial to follow in Mt. Hebron Cemetery.
